We have received inquiries from a number of concerned horse owners. As is usually the case an already healthy horse is the best defense against any threat to your horse's well being. If you think that your horse is at risk (for any disease for that matter), the most important strategy you have is to keep your horses stress-free; controlling stress is the single biggest factor in maintaining optimum immunity.

Avoid over-training, long-hauling, early weanings, over-vaccinating, over-medicating, unnecessary confinement, isolation and changes in herd dynamics. Keep them lightly exercised and in their normal routine. Do not feed any type of grain other than high-fibre feeds.

For further preventative measures the Riva’s Remedies Office recommends the following:

Vitamin B12 – 6,000 mcg daily (Supports the nervous system, detoxifies the liver and improves immunity)

Organic Selenium – 2,000 mcg daily (Supports the nervous system, strengthens the liver and improves immunity)

Equi-Boost – ¼ cup daily (Liver support, anti-viral activity and nutritional supplement)

If your horse should show any signs of inflammation or neurological symptoms due to any strain of virus use the following:
Joint Clear – 2-3 tablespoons daily (Natural anti-inflammatory, immune booster, adrenal gland support)
Pro-Viral – One dose (5 – 10 pump sprays) – twice daily (A homeopathic formulation used for swellings, depression, muscle tremors, lack of coordination, disorientation and/or paralysis)                      

(Joint-Clear and Pro-Viral can also be used to treat adverse vaccine reactions).
And finally, keep any virus threat in perspective. The number of fatalities among the hundreds of thousands of horses who have been exposed is significantly less than 1%.
As is the case with most viral infections the majority of horses don’t even show symptoms. Many more horses are dying every day from colic and laminitis – conditions that result from domestic lifestyles that are totally under our control!
