About Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine that uses highly diluted doses of substances to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanism. Also known as “vibrational medicine,” homeopathic medicine is based on the principle that natural substances are capable, in a diluted form, of curing the same symptoms they cause in a crude form when taken by a healthy person. For example, ordinary table salt when taken in excess can cause a variety of symptoms; but when taken in a diluted, or homeopathic form, it will heal those same symptoms. Peeling an onion causes irritating eye and nose discharge making homeopathic onion a useful remedy for the common cold.
By studying the symptoms that develop when a healthy person repeatedly ingests a certain remedy, homeopaths can determine which symptoms the remedy is capable of curing. This is called the Law of Similars or “like cures like”.
Instead of suppressing symptoms, homeopathic remedies support the inherent ability of the body to heal itself.
The laboratory process of dilution and succession (vigorous shaking) releases the vibrational, (ie: healing properties) of the substance. The more frequently the substance is diluted the more powerful it becomes.
Homeopathic remedies can be prepared from plants, minerals or animal products.
Why Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a natural and highly effective type of medicine that is very safe for both people and animals, including pregnant mares, lactating mares, foals, geriatric horses and horses with illnesses of all types. Homeopathic medicines can be used for virtually any acute or chronic health issue: allergies; skin conditions; lameness; respiratory difficulties; hormone complaints; digestive problems and behavioural imbalances, to name just a few.
Homeopathic remedies can also be used with performance horses since the dilution process results in negative drug testing.
How To Use Homeopathic Remedies
In acute conditions, homeopathic medicines are very fast acting. Often you will see results within one to two minutes of administering the correct remedy. In acute situations, homeopathic remedies can be used as needed. As a general rule, and unless otherwise instructed, discontinue the remedy as soon as symptoms disappear; if symptoms reappear repeat the remedy. Homeopathic remedies are usually available locally in 30C potency. For higher potencies or for chronic cases please consult with an equine homeopath.
In most cases homeopathic remedies can be used together. There are also homeopathic combinations available that are formulated for specific health conditions. See “Resources” at the end of this chapter.
Administering Homeopathic Remedies
Homeopathic medicines come in the form of pellets or liquid. They are vibrational and need to be administered directly into a clean mouth without food, otherwise the vibration may be absorbed by the food. To administer homeopathic remedies, pellets can be put inside the lip or offered on the bottom of a clean pail or dish. Use 5 pellets for each dosage. Liquid medicines can by sprayed or syringed directly into the mouth. For horses use 5-10 pump sprays of any of the Riva’s Remedies Homeopathic Formulations or spray into a small amount of water and syringe.
Touch pellets with clean hands only and handle the pellets as little as possible.
Don’t store homeopathic remedies near electrical appliances or computer equipment. Contrary to popular belief, I have seen no evidence that the effects of homeopathy are neutralized by menthol or mint products.
